What makes Barcelona so special?

Not many European cities have been as hot as Barcelona the last couple of years.
Hot as in ´hip, a place you can’t afford to miss´, although the temperatures can be scorching here too in July and August. But then, there always is the cool sea breeze.

The ever surprising capital of Catalunya is inviting you to come and live its pleasant and upbeat lifestyle once again in 2004. This year, the Forum de las Culturas in the brand new port area Maresme will open its doors to the world. Hundreds of expositions, theatre shows, concerts, and dialogues between international policy makers and public are scheduled between May and September and there is something in the bag for everyone. Forum 2004 is indeed a unique event, and it is no coincidence that Barcelona, a city that always has had a knack for global, cosmopolitan interactions, is organizing it.

Ask a hundred tourists on the street about what makes Barcelona such a magical place, and chances are they will not be able to answer you.

The beautifully decorated houses of Gaudi (la Casa Milla and Battlo), that are illuminated at night? The well maintained beach area, so full of life and trendy and urban bars (“chiringuitos”) to listen to music and watch the people go by? The exuberant nightlife, with its numerous great clubs and cafés ? The restaurants? The museums? The mysterious and still not finished Iglesia de la Sagrada Familia,? The cultural diversity?

It is all of this and more. Most probably the answer will contain a combination of above mentioned things and throw something else in the mix, atmosphere, or ¨ambiente¨, as the Spanish say. Barcelona is like a dozen colours, delicately blended into something very new and exciting.

Sit at café Zurich and have a coffee. Stroll down the Ramblas. See a play at theatre Liceu. Watch the musicians in Parc Ciutadella. Nibble some ´churros and dip ´em in hot chocolate after a night out. Have a walk through student neighbourhood Gracia and sit down at one of the squares. Or just walk anywhere, without aim, simply stroll and be part of the urban jungle. There is no doubt you will feel the ¨ambiente¨, and know that not many cities can provide you with this mixture of sensations.

Visit Barcelona and take it with you to wherever you live. Be assured, you’ll come back soon to get some more. Barcelona keeps on drawing people from all over the world, and as things are now, will do so for a long time to come.
